My favorite restaurant on Folly Beach.

I don’t really like Folly Beach. It’s crowded, it’s kitschy, and no matter what time of day it is, it always seems to take me an hour to get out there because of traffic. If I’m going to go to the beach, I usually drive out to Sullivan’s or Isle of Palms. The only thing that makes trekking out to Folly Beach worth the while is Lost Dog Café.

If you’re a regular reader of my blog, you’ve probably heard me talk about Lost Dog and their delicious biscuits and gravy (aka the best  biscuits and gravy I’ve ever eaten in my life. Ever.) One time, when I went with Sean and Christine to meet Sean’s mom, we split an order of biscuits and gravy while we were waiting for her to arrive. They were so good, we ended up getting another order after Sean’s mom showed up. And we probably got a side of biscuits and homemade sausage gravy with our meal, too, because we’re fatties, and it’s SO FREAKING GOOD. When we ordered it with my mom and dad, we finished the entire plate between the four of us in under a minute. It was impressive (or pathetic, depending on your perspective).

I love to order the Southern Eggs Benedict, which is a fried green tomato and a poached egg on an English muffin topped with hollandaise sauce and a side of fruit. Lost Dog also offers a “Folly Benedict” which is eggs benedict with a crab cake, which is also pretty dang.

I always order the “quesadilla for the hungry dog,” which I know sounds like kind of a cop out, but it’s so good! They stuff this huge tortilla with refried and black beans, peppers, onions, and cheese and serve it with salsa and sour cream. I always add chicken, but there’s an option to add shrimp if you’re into that sort of thing (weirdo).

When we went with my parents, my mom ordered the special wrap of the day. It had pork and some other stuff in it, and it was freaking delicious. We all really liked it, and if they put it on the menu permanently, I might start ordering it on the reg.

When we went with Ben’s roommate, Doug, he ordered the “society street French toast” served with fresh strawberries. Although he’s not a huge fan of biscuits and gravy (because he’s a communist), I think he did like his French toast, which looked beautiful and delicious. I don’t know for sure, though, as he never offered to share (oh the irony).

Lost Dog has the best chocolate milk. They squirt Hershey’s syrup along the side of a mason jar before filling it up with some delicious chocolate milk so it’s double chocolate. It’s like the inception of breakfast drinks. Lauren says their Bloody Mary’s are pretty good, but I think mixing tomato juice with liquor sounds like something only a homeless person would enjoy, so, I guess you’ll just have to take her word for it.

If you’re vacationing in Charleston and you’re looking for a really great breakfast/brunch place that is really delicious and won’t break the bank, I definitely recommend Lost Dog. And get the biscuits and gravy (unless you’re a dirty commie like Doug). I honestly don’t know why Guy Fieri and Diners’ Drive ins & Dives hasn’t been there yet.

So, you may have noticed there wasn’t a quote last week. #whoops I didn’t intend to not publish one, but I just couldn’t seem to find the time to get a quote out on Monday. Then I kept saying “Oh, I’ll do that tomorrow,” and then all of a sudden it was Sunday night again, and I realized that I was going to have to give up on August 13th. Maybe I’ll get around to it eventually, but I’d rather focus on the number of recipes and restaurant reviews I’ve had stock piled on my computer for the past few weeks.

This weekend, my parents moved my brother in at USC and popped down to Charleston afterward to visit for the weekend. It was great, we had Mellow Mushroom for dinner Friday night, and watched the new Jim Gaffigan special (Mr. Universe) before bed.

Saturday morning, we went to breakfast at Dixie Supply Cafe & Bakery, because my mom saw it on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives and thought the food there looked delicious. They say the camera adds 10 pounds, and apparently it also makes food look better than it actually is, because our breakfast was sub-par at best. I got their signature breakfast–scrambled eggs, sausage, homefries, and a biscuit with a side of sausage gravy. The eggs were burnt and had this weird gray stuff on them (I assume somebody burnt the non-stick cooking spray before cooking the eggs), so they weren’t very appetizing. The home fries were dried out and looked like they’d been sitting out under the heat lamp for hours before being reheated. The sausage patty was greasy and tasteless. The biscuit and gravy was the only redeemable part of the meal, and that wasn’t even near the top of the list of best biscuits and gravy I’ve ever had. In fact, it probably wouldn’t even make the top 20. Dad got the Wadmalaw Shrimp sandwich, with bacon and a fried green tomato on wheatberry bread, which was what was featured on DDD. This sandwich looks like something I could make at home, and none of it was outstanding. I find it hard to believe that something as mediocre as this could make it on Food Network, but to each his own, I guess.

Saturday night we went to Beaufort to see the Expendables 2 and Total Recall at the Drive In, and had dinner beforehand at 11th Street Dockside restaurant in Port Royal. Dinner was awesome. We had a great view overlooking the shrimping docks and boats and the Port Royal Sound right before sunset. It was beautiful. We ordered these jalapeno and cream cheese-stuffed fried shrimp served with a salsa ranch sauce as an appetizer, and they were amazing. Like a jalapeno popper inside a jumbo shrimp. Delish. Ben and mom split an order of fried mushrooms, since he’s allergic to shellfish. Instead of being little mushrooms that they battered and fried, they were like mushroom poppers, pieces of a big mushroom that were chunked up and battered and fried and served with a horseradish sauce. They really liked it.

For entrees, Mom and I split a pound of steamed shrimp with french fries and a crab cake. The shrimp were perfectly cooked and not overly fishy tasting, which I really liked. The crab cake was awesome, as well. Big chunks of crab, not a lot of bread or anything, served with this creamy pepper sauce. It was great. Ben got potato-crusted grouper with vegetables, which he really, really liked. I thought it was quite tasty, as well. Dad got Buttermilk fried flounder and fried oysters with a baked potato. He liked it, I think, since he ate it all. Expendables 2 was great, albeit pretty predictable, but I mean it’s not like I was expecting much. Explosions, gratuitous violence, corny jokes. It was freaking awesome. Total Recall was ok, but I thought it went on kind of long. Tina loved the drive in, though. She couldn’t remember the last time she was at a drive in, it’d been so long. She thought it was sooooo cool. And she said those three sentences about 15 times that night, at least.

On Sunday, we went to The Lost Dog Cafe out on Folly for breakfast, so I could show my parents what good biscuits and gravy tastes like. We got a full order and devoured it within a minute of the waitress delivering it to our table. I probably could’ve eaten like 5 more, but I showed some restraint. I actually went with the intention of reviewing it, so I’ll save the story of what we ordered for that post.

This weekend was awesome. Friday night Blue Ion had a going away party for Katie at HoM (which is pronounced like “home” and not “rhymes with mom” like I originally thought), which was really fun. The burgers were delicious (albeit expensive). I got one called the Godzilla which was a double decker burger with arugula pesto, goat cheese, smoked onion slaw, and fried pickle chips which I paired with one of my favorite local beers, a Holy City Pluff Mud Porter. It was really good (although the burger alone was $9 and it was another $3 if you wanted to add fries…. thankfully Blue Ion paid). We spent a lot of the evening talking about old school Nickelodeon game shows. Pretty much it was the best night ever.

Saturday I spent a good couple of hours spring cleaning my house, and making room in the guest room for my new summer roommate, Johannes. He’s a really awesome German guy who’s allergic to cats (but hopefully he and Fezzik will get along otherwise). Saturday night Shanna and Max came to town for a visit and we had dinner at Moe’s Crosstown, where I got a BLT burger (beef burger with fresh mozzarella cheese, bacon, and a fried green tomato) with hand cut fries. After dinner we walked around downtown for like 3 hours or so. We played at the perpetual motion park, stood on the echo blocks at Waterfront Park, and watched a lady have a meltdown and almost beat her kid to death on the street. It was pretty entertaining. We ended the night with cookies and Louis CK standup. It was awesome.

On Sunday, we decided to ignore the threat of Tropical Storm Alberto hovering off the coast and go to the beach anyway. We spent about an hour and a half at Folly, but eventually the wind, the freezing ocean water, and our growling stomachs got to be too much so we left and got some lunch. We then lounged poolside (mostly hot tub-side) at the pool in my apartment complex before they showered and left to go back to Greenville. Then Johannes moved all of his stuff in and I watched Game of Thrones and Mad Men before going to bed.

This was a very busy weekend for me. First, Friday, was awesome because it consisted of sushi and sham wow (which is an awesome game that I really recommend you try). I really do need to invest in more ping pong balls so as so stop stealing toys from my cat. I think that probably says something about me, but I’m in no mood to evaluate my life choices.

Saturday was awesome because it was both Cinco de Drinko and A Charleston Affair. During the day, we ran around town trying to find an orange bow tie for Ben (apparently that’s not a common color around here…. this is the one and only time I’ve ever thought to myself “Man, I wish I lived in Clemson”). After we acquired the bow tie, Ben, Lauren, Woodrow, and I went to Blackbeard’s Cove to play a rousing game of putt-putt. Lauren beat the crap out of all of us. I’ve really gotten terrible at putt-putt. Afterwards, we decided that since it was 90 degrees and we were all sweaty and gross, we’d play a game they had called “Water Wars” where you launch water balloons from a sling shot at the opposing team and a huge burst of water would launch up and spray you. You were supposed to be trying to hit a target, but I’m pretty sure the attendants were just randomly hitting a button to splash us, which was fine with me, because it was hot and hella fun.

A Charleston Affair was quite enjoyable. I had a great time making awkward small talk with people I hadn’t seen since graduation (which was a year ago today, btw), so that was…interesting. But I also saw a lot of my Phi Sig friends, which was really fun. Bar hopping afterward was even better because I limited the crowd to people I actually enjoy being around. Also, Journey karaoke, as usually.

Sunday was spent eating hungover biscuits and gravy at The Lost Dog Cafe on Folly (someday I’ll actually go there with the intent of writing a review), where we met up with Bennett and Tommy, who was FINALLY back from Argentina! In the afternoon we went to see The Avengers, which was freaking awesome. Best superhero movie so far. Then Lauren and I played Skip-bo and ate Mellow (#standard) until Game of Thrones came on.

This week’s food quote comes from comedian Craig Kilborn, whom I find occasionally funny. I think this quote was particularly appropriate for the weekend, especially after Trashcans at Chucktown Tavern.
