Restaurant Reviews Washington, DC

Eatonville, Washington DC [CLOSED]

April 26, 2013

When visiting Washington DC from Charleston, SC, the first thing any true Southerner starts to miss is sweet tea. Even southern transplants like Lauren find themselves craving that sweet nectar that, for some reason, is only found in the south. Asking for sweet tea and receiving a glass of unsweetened tea and a packet of Sweet’n Low, just isn’t the same. Not by a long shot. Which is why Lauren decided to we needed to eat brunch at Eatonville, because they have “homemade sweet tea” on the menu.

We love sweet tea so much we infuse it in our liquor. That's dedication.

I was worried that they were going to try to cater their sweet tea to more northern palates, but they surprised me by actually having legitimate southern-style sweet tea. It was delicious. Plus it came in mason jars with plenty of ice, which for a moment made me forget I was in DC. Our waiter had personality oozing out of the ears and was hilarious, attentive, and generally just a very fun dude. I wish more waiters were like him. The restaurant itself was also very cool. The whole restaurant is themed around Zora Neale Hurston and is in fact named after her Florida hometown. They have lots of cool murals on the walls, which I quite enjoyed looking at while eating my brunch.

Sorry for the unflattering picture, Sara, but that artwork is just so cool!

We were joined by Lauren’s roommate Ashley and friend Sara (who’s a vegetarian. But a real one, not like Naomi). Sara got the arugula-spinach frittata (sautéed shiitake mushrooms, grape tomatoes, avocado, crumbled feta cheese, basil pesto with a buttermilk biscuit). It actually looked delicious, and I’m assuming it tasted good, too, as Sara definitely did some damage. They do a really good job of identifying vegetarian- and vegan-friendly items on the menu, so this is a good place for herbivores and carnivores alike. Sara also got a mimosa, which she said was especially yummy because they used fresh squeezed orange juice instead of that slop from a carton. The rest of us skipped out on alcohol with brunch because we were recovering from the night before.

Lauren stuck with your basic breakfast fare of scrambled eggs, bacon, and a biscuit. She also ordered a side of fried okra, which came unlike I’ve ever seen fried okra before. They cut the okra into strips before breading them and frying them, almost like okra fries. I actually liked them a lot, despite how different they were. Lauren loved them and ate all of it, which is surprising because she doesn’t actually eat real food.

But you can cut basically anything up into strips and fry it and I'd think it was delicious.

Ashley opted for scrambled eggs with cheese (which looked delicious), macaroni and cheese, a bowl of fresh fruit, and a biscuit, which she seemed to enjoy.

Mmm.... Cheeeeesy

I was the only one who didn’t get eggs. I decided to get “The Callahan,” a fried chicken breast on a buttermilk biscuit, covered in jalapeno-sausage gravy, served with a side of mac and cheese. I thought the the mac and cheese was delicious (hooray cavatappi!) and I applaud any restaurant who decides to serve macaroni as a bunch side dish. My only complaint is that I would’ve liked a more detailed description of what cheeses it was made with on the menu. I thought the fried chicken biscuit was delicious; the biscuit was perfectly buttery and flaky and the chicken had just the perfect amount of breading. The jalapeno-sausage gravy was good, although I was a bit thrown off by the fact that it was brown (it’s camouflaged in that picture, blending in with the chicken), but it was still tasty. I do wish they would’ve put more on than the tablespoon I received. I like lots of gravy with my biscuit. I also thought the collard green garnish was a nice touch.

Man, that macaroni looks delicious. I have a problem.

I couldn’t resist the temptation to try their jalapeno-gruyere grits because I’d never had grits with jalapeno before. I think part of me wanted the grits to be bad so I could hold onto some shred of superiority, but I was sorely disappointed, when they turned out to be de-freaking-licious. They came out after we’d all pretty much finished eating, and although Lauren had been complaining of being “stuffed” only moments before, she miraculously regained some of her appetite after one spoonful of grits. They were that good.

Eatonville Jalapeno and Gruyere grits

Gosh, I love grits.

I didn’t expect to get good southern food at a restaurant in DC, but Eatonville pleasantly surprised me. Whether you’re a seasoned Southern cuisine connoisseur or have no idea what “grits” are, I’m confident you’ll have a positive and memorable experience.

15 Reasons My Christmas Break Was Awesome

January 5, 2013

It’s been over 2 weeks since I actually sat down to write something for the blog, and this just is unacceptable. To make up for my utter lack of motivation and drive to do anything over the holidays except eat, drink, and sleep, I present…

Highlights Of My Christmas Season

1. Rocked An Awesomely Ugly Sweater

Blue Ion Christmas Party was “Cheesy Sweater Themed.” Nailed it.

I feel no shame in admitting that I'd gladly and unabashedly wear that sweater year round.

2. Baked Up Storm With My Mother

What would Christmas be without Christmas cookies? Not nearly as exciting, that’s for sure. And my mother and I definitely did our part to make sure Christmas was chock full of sweet, sugary, chocolatey goodness. Snowballs, chocolate chip biscotti, Reese’s peanut butter cup cookies and a giant apple pie (not a cookie, I’m just saying, we went a little crazy).

3. Decided that I eventually want to move to Atlanta.

“Why?” you might ask. Well, Atlanta’s got everything: great ethnic food, awesome shopping, ridiculous traffic, and Sean and Christine, so really the better question is “why am I not already there?”

4. Received the COOLEST APRONS EVER

My mom hand-sewed these 4 awesome Harry Potter-themed aprons (one representing each house). Apparently they took her forever to make. When I suggested she make more and sell them online, she started laughing maniacally and rocking back and forth in the fetal position.

5. Got Some Homemade Queen Of The Food Age Swag!

Ben commissioned his Mom to hand paint this awesome Pilsner glass for/from my blog, and totally blew me away.

Queendom becomes me.

6. Cried Like A Baby During The “Leverage” Finale

I know they’re not real people, and I know it’s super cheesy, but I still cried. It wasn’t pretty.

I'm really going to miss you guys

I’m really going to miss you guys. Especially you, Hardison.

7. Made My Mom Cry With My Awesome Gift Giving Skills

My brother and I collaborated to make these three pretty hilarious recreations of photos from our childhood.

Basically, I'm the best daughter ever.

8. Proved That Girls CAN Be Handy!

I made these two really awesome gifts for Christine (book worm book case) and my brother (beer pong/portable ping pong table). I’M AMAZING.

Can She Build It, YES SHE CAN!

9. Spun Around Under The Tree At Marion Square

Lauren came to visit, and we did our annual Christmas Extravaganza–presents, and drinking, and Christmas lights–and spun around under the big tree in Marion Square… I love Christmas!

This picture makes me dizzy.

10. Dipped A Bunch Of Stuff In Chocolate

When I went to visit Ben’s family after New Year’s Day, his mom had us do this really fun food craft project, which involved dipping pretzels sticks in chocolates while Ben’s brother serenaded us. Then we ran out of pretzels and went a little crazy, dipping potato chips and orange slices in chocolate, too.

Food crafts are my favorite kind of crafts.

11. Took My Nerdiness To A Whole New Level

Lauren bought me Star Trek Settler Of Catan for Christmas. Yes, you read that right. STAR TREK. I don’t even care that it’s the nerdiest thing ever, it’s freaking awesome. I played it probably ten times over break. We even got Christine to play (after we plied her with some delicious wine), and even she had to admit it was fun.

Even *they* think it's a little much.

But, hey, at least it’s not Magic: The Gathering, right?

12. Became a Home Depot Expert

Helped my mom redesign our house after it flooded. Pretty sure I’ve looked at more paint samples in the past 2 weeks than most people see in their entire lives.

Turns out, there are WAY MORE than 50 shades of gray.

Turns out, there are WAY MORE than 50 shades of gray.

13. Refused To Kiss Jason Sudeikis

Ok, so this one TECHNICALLY only occurred in my imagination. I had a dream that Jason Sudeikis of SNL fame was super into me and was making some moves. Dream Me was super loyal to Ben, though, and refused to cave into Mr-Sudeikis-Of-My-Dreams’ advances. Dream Me is kind of dumb, because real life me would have totally gone for it.

Don't worry, Ben would totally make out with JS too, so it's all good.

Don’t worry, Ben would totally make out with JS too, so it’s all good.

14. Watched Way Too Many Movies

The Hobbit (twice), 5 Year Engagement, Star Trek, Pitch Perfect (three times), Love Actually, Ted, Looper, Men in Black 3, and The Muppet Movie. Not to mention 4 episodes of Dexter, and about 8 episodes of Duck Dynasty (aka my new favorite show). If you haven’t seen Pitch Perfect yet, go see it. It’s hilarious.

15. Kept That Drunken Promise I Made 2 Years Ago.

Two year’s ago at New Year’s Eve, I promised 2 of my best friends that we’d always spend New Year’s Eve together (followed by Sean’s delicious Hoppin’ John and Collards on New Year’s Day). We’ve successfully carried on that tradition for one year so far, so we’re pretty much set for life.

Chilled glass of champagne, baked brie, good friends, what more could you ask for?

Chilled glass of champagne, baked brie, good friends…what a way to start 2013!

Quote of the Week

Quote of the Week 6/11/12

June 12, 2012

I am exhausted. This post is late because I basically slept all day yesterday once I got back from Atlanta. I could probably sleep another three days and be totally ok.

I left for Auburn on Thursday to visit Ben, because I’m a silly girl who misses her boyfriend. He picked me up in Atlanta and brought me back to Auburn where he made a delicious pork roast in the crock pot. Friday morning I tried to stick to my diet by working out while Ben was in class. After he got out of class, we drove around the backroads around the city. We saw a bunch of cows. Nothing too exciting.

For dinner we went to a place called Cheeburger Cheeburger that looked like an old-fashioned diner like in “Grease.” They had a huge list of ingredients so you could build a custom burger, and an even bigger list of ingredients to build a perfect milkshake. I had a burger with cheddar cheese, onions, guacamole, tomatoes, chopped garlic, and bacon, and stuck with a Dr. Pepper float. Ben got a chocolate milkshake with irish cream that was pretty delicious. We also split a thing of fries and onion rings. It was pretty delicious, but I definitely felt gross afterward. After dinner, a bunch of his friends went to see Prometheus but we didn’t want to go, so we hung out with his roommate and built a blanket fort and played with glow sticks.

On Saturday Ben and I lazed around and spent most of the day watching HBO’s Girls, and other television shows/youtube videos. For dinner we went to this mediocre barbecue restaurant that RAN OUT OF COLLARD GREENS (how do you run out of collard greens?? At a barbecue restaurant?? IN THE SOUTH?!?!). And the night pretty much went down hill from there, culminating in the shooting deaths of three people literally right outside of Ben’s apartment. All in all, not exactly how I pictured spending my time in Auburn.

On Sunday we tried our hand at making homemade crunchwrap supremes. We failed miserably, although it was a fun failure. Ben took me back to Atlanta and we met up with Sean and Christine for dinner for some of the worst pizza I’ve ever eaten.

Although I was pretty disappointed in most of the food I ate over the weekend (Ben’s pork, and Cheeburger excluded) I still love food enough to enjoy the experience of trying new things. There’s a risk you take when eating at a new restaurant. This could either be something great or something awful, but you’ll never know until you try. Which brings us to this week’s quote from Mexican journalist, Alma Guillermoprieto.

“I love food and I love everything involved with food. I love the fun of it. I love restaurants. I love cooking, although I don’t cook very much. I love kitchens.”
–Alma Guillermoprieto

“Do you see the space between my hands? Someone fill it with Cheeseburger ASAP!”
