Your shiny new gift card will be heading your way shortly. As a thank you for the huge response for this giveaway, I picked a second winner who will also receive a Food Lion gift card. Food Lion Frugal Cook-Off & Gift Card Giveaway

February 28, 2014

A few weeks ago, I was asked to participate in the Food Lion Frugal Cook-Off at the Charleston Cooks store here in Charleston. The premise of the event was similar to Iron Chef or Chopped, and I was excited to be part of it.

Here’s the gist of the event:

You’ll be paired with another blogger and will have 45 minutes to cook a dinner for 4 on a budget of $15 (protein excluded). There will be a “pantry” of Food Lion brand products for you to cook with and your protein will be a surprise! The dishes will be presented to the judges and scored by its taste and your ability to stay within the budget!

Easy peasy! I do that kind of thing all the time! Oh, wait, no. The opposite of that. Anything I cook usually takes me 2 hours and most of the dishes in my kitchen. I was freaking out, but luckily I have lots of people in my life to encourage me and keep me from having a full on panic attack. Thanks guys!

And on the other end of the spectrum was Food Lion.

And on the other end of the spectrum was Food Lion.

When I got to Charleston Cooks, we were greeted with a buffet of items from the Food Lion deli, along with beer and wine. I got a sweet lime green apron with my name and Queen of the Food Age embroidered in it, and I got to meet a lot of really cool people.

I was partnered with Lisa, whose blog Charleston Treasures is really great and you should go read it. I had a great time working with her, and she was a wonderful partner to cook with!

Would you have guessed that she has 6 kids??

Would you have guessed that she has 6 kids??

At the beginning of the event, we were presented with 4 cuts of meat (pork chop, tilapia, chicken breast, and ground turkey), hidden under aluminum foil. Lisa let me do the honors of picking, and we ended up with tilapia. Although I was really hoping for the chicken, I was glad not to have gotten the turkey or pork. We had the perfect idea for our tilapia: fish tacos! The only problem: no tortillas. So we scrapped that idea and came up with about 15 others before finally settling on a crispy Greek-inspired baked tilapia with rice pilaf and cucumber salad.

Don't you want to eat that right now? Yes. Yes you do.

Don’t you want to eat that right now? Yes. Yes you do.

When we presented to the judges, I was a bit of a blathering idiot, I even called it chicken by accident, which I followed up with “Oh crap. Sorry, I meant tilapia.” Classy. But I was pleasantly surprised and excited when we ended up winning second place!

So proud!

So proud!

Here’s the full video from the event! You can find me at the 0:36 mark, struggling because MATH IS HARD YOU GUYS. I especially love the part at the end where they “highlight” all of the dishes we made. Literally there were 4 dishes and they only named 3 of them in the video. Guess whose dish got left out. SPOILER ALERT: it’s mine.

You can view the rest of the event photos below. Thanks for being such loyal readers! Be sure to take a look at all of the other participants’ blogs because they’re all really great!

And here’s Lisa’s and my video! I especially love my quote at the end where I announce to the world that I’m basically a crazy cat lady. I don’t know why I’m so awkward, you guys. I just am.

As a reward for participating, Food Lion sent me home with a nice swag bag of their products, as well as a $100 gift card. I decided that I would reward you, my loyal followers, with another giveaway.  Enter below for your chance to win a $100 gift card to Food Lion! Just post a comment with your favorite tilapia recipe to enter. You also get additional entries for following me on my various social media channels. Good luck!

Delta Touch2O® Faucet Review & Giveaway!

January 10, 2014

In September of 2013 I was given the amazing opportunity to attend Southern Living’s Taste of Charleston festival as a blogger correspondent for Delta Faucet. In exchange for them paying for my ticket, the cost of transportation, and giving me a Delta Touch2O® faucet to try out, all I had to do was show up, eat a bunch of delicious food, and then tell you guys all about it, which I did in my Taste of Charleston a couple months ago. It’s definitely one of the best quality kitchen faucets, especially for a messy cook like me!

Does this jog your memory?

Does this jog your memory?

I’ll also be posting a recipe next week that I created after being inspired by all I saw and ate at Taste of Charleston. Cooking and cleaning have become so much easier with my new faucet, and I’m so spoiled now that sometimes I forget that most faucets require you to use a handle in order to work.

MAKE THE WATER WORK

My mom called a plumber friend of hers to help install it, because we didn’t want try and install it ourselves and end up flooding the whole house (which really wouldn’t have been all that unlikely). He installed it in a snap, and we stood around playing with it for a really long time.

Like... way longer than we should have.

Like… way longer than we should have.

Mom was having her Christmas party that evening, so she was excited to show it off to all of her friends, who were super jealous. Basically everyone should have one of these faucets, because they’re as much fun to play with as they are convenient and useful.

Tina is so festive!

Tina is so festive!

But don’t take my word for it! I’m giving you an opportunity to win one of these awesome faucets for yourself.  You can choose the style & finish (up to a $638 value). The only exclusion is that Delta can only ship to the United States. So if you’re in Canada, Mexico, or Europe, you can still enter as long as you have a friend or relative in the US who is willing to receive it for you!

All you have to do to enter is leave a blog comment below saying which Touch2O® faucet you’d choose if you won. You get extra entries for:

  • Liking my page on Facebook
  • Following me on Twitter
  • Tweeting about the giveaway (this can be done once per day for extra entries!).

Be sure to visit Delta’s facebook page and comment there that you are entered in Queen of the Food Age’s giveaway (this isn’t extra points, it just makes me look good). The winner will be announced Monday January 20th, so you have 9.5 days to enter. Good luck!

Quote of the Week 12/9/13

December 10, 2013

How’s everyone doing? I just got back from an AMAZING weekend in NYC with one of my very bestest friends, Christine. I ate some delicious pizza and possibly the best Italian food I’ve ever had in my life. Plus, we got to see Big Fish on Broadway with Naomi, which was spectacular AND get drunch (and then drunk) with Tommy. And did I mention that we did all of that in basically 36 hours? Yeah. It was an unforgettable experience.

This week’s quote is about pizza because I’m a fattie and still dreaming of that thin crust NY pizza I had this weekend. Enjoy!

Quote of the Week 12/2/13

December 2, 2013

Holy crap, it’s December already. How did that happen so fast? I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving, I know I did!

This week’s quote comes from Robert Brault and is perfect for our post-Thanksgiving food hangover. Enjoy!

“I suppose I will die never knowing what pumpkin pie tastes like when you have room for it.”
–Robert Brault

But I'm kind of okay with that.

Taste of Charleston

October 25, 2013

This year, I was fortunate enough to be asked to be a blogger correspondent for the Southern Living Taste of Charleston on behalf of Delta Faucet. In exchange for them paying for my ticket, the cost of transportation, and giving me 2 Delta Touch2o faucets, all I had to do was show up, eat a bunch of delicious food, and then tell you guys all about it. So, here goes.

Pre-Event: Welcome Dinner at Circa 1886

Saturday night before the event, I was invited to a welcome dinner at Circa 1886. This was great because I got to meet the other blogger correspondents, people from Delta and Southern Living (including Southern Living Test Kitchen Editor Norman King), and I got a free dinner at an amazing restaurant. Here are some pictures:

Once Upon A Time I Made A Wedding Cake

October 23, 2013

My schedule is all off-kilter recently due to being sick and out of the country for the past couple of days, so in lieu of a quote this week, I’m going to give you some cake eye-candy to salivate over.

As you guys may have gathered, I baked the wedding cake for my best friends’ wedding 2 weeks ago. It was one of the scariest undertakings I’ve ever foolishly volunteered for, but despite the constant montage playing in my head of things that could go wrong, it actually turned out pretty perfectly. I just wish I’d taken more pictures of the baking / decorating process.

Cake: Southern pecan spice cake
Frosting: Butter pecan cream cheese frosting

I’m not going to give away my secret recipe, but I will say that it had lots of butter in it (so you know it was delicious).
