Charleston Mac Off 10/24/15

October 12, 2015

Saturday, October 24th, A Snappy Event will host the 6th annual Mac Off competition from 2 to 7 p.m. at The Grove at Patriots Point in Mount Pleasant, located at 40 Patriots Point Road. Yours truly will be one of the critics in the “Critic’s Choice” competition this year. I get to judge a mac & cheese contest! All my dreams are coming true.

*swoon*

*swoon*

No other food combines love, comfort, and Southern roots like mac and cheese. This melt in your mouth mainstay is a classic that is served as a side dish, a pasta entrée, a casserole, fried appetizer or even dessert on many Charleston menus. The Mac Off gives tribute to our Southern love of this versatile cheesy dish and seeks to crown the best of the best in Charleston.

Last year, 6,000 people gathered to sample traditional and gourmet offerings of mac and cheese and award bragging rights to “The Best Mac & Cheese” in Charleston. This year, local restaurants and chefs will compete for the title again.

Event attendees will have the opportunity to savor over 20 delectable macaroni and cheese samples and cast a vote for their favorite at the end of the event. A guest panel of local celebrity judges will also choose their favorite and present two awards at the end of the competition: Best Mac and Cheese in Charleston: Food Critics Choice (which I will be judging!), and Best Mac and Cheese in Charleston: People’s Choice.

Some of this year’s participating competitors include Roti Rolls, Bohemian Bull, The Loophole, Southerly Restaurant and Patio, Cherrywood BBQ & Ale House, The Fish House, Charleston Artisan Cheese House, Smoky Oak, The Shelter among others.

However, macaroni and cheese isn’t the only attraction at the festival. This year live music will be provided by Banana Pancakes and Bootless, our second-annual Home Grown Cooks competition will showcase local home chefs, and this year the Mac Off takes mac and cheese eating to a whole new level with the first macaroni and cheese eating competition sponsored by Charleston Artisan Cheese House. Attendees will also enjoy a farmer’s market-inspired Vendor Village hosting local artisans and craftsmen and a Kid’s Zone sponsored by Annie’s Nannies and HOPE Acres Rescue.

Tickets are $10.00 in advance and can be purchased online at www.charlestonmacoff.com. Food and Beverage tickets will be sold for $1.00 within the event. Tickets can be used to purchase Mac and Cheese, Beer, Wine and Soda. Part of the proceeds from this event will benefit Lowcountry Local First, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that seeks to cultivate an environment of success for local independent businesses and farmers. Through its Buy Local, Eat Local and Local Works Initiatives, LLF raises awareness about the positive fiscal and societal benefits of supporting a local living economy and assists local businesses with enhancing their growth and visibility.

Earth Fare Opening & Gift Card Giveaway

September 22, 2015

A new Earth Fare store (#39) is opening in Summerville! This is their newest store and 2nd in the Charleston area, the first of which is across from my new office in South Windermere (btw, did you know it was the 2nd ever Earth Fare franchise? Now you do! You’re welcome.) I had a chance to stop by and preview the store before it opened, and let me tell you: It is beautiful! It’s 23,000 square feet of healthy, organic glory that will inspire you to eat better and live a healthier lifestyle.

Look how fancy!

Look how fancy!

Earth Fare prides itself on its high quality standards, which includes no high-fructose corn syrup; no artificial fats, colors, flavors, preservatives, or sweeteners; no antibiotics or synthetic growth hormones in the meat; and no bleached or bromated flour. The Earth Fare in West Ashley was built in the 90’s, so although it is still perfectly good, it is lacking some of the aesthetic charm that the new store has. I’ll touch on some of my favorite features:

Scoop Your Own Ravioli

I would like ALL THE RAVIOLI

I would like ALL THE RAVIOLI

And they have a flavor called “mac and cheese ravioli.” Uuuuh, yes please.

Scoop Your Own Bath Salts

Not the kind that make you eat your friend's face. The relaxing kind.

Not the kind that make you eat your friend’s face. The relaxing kind.

Sweet citrus, fresh mint, handmade soap…. My bath is going to be so luxurious!

Scoop Your Own Candy

Hello bulk candy, let me introduce you to my hips.

Hello bulk candy, let me introduce you to my hips.

But it’s healthy candy, so it’s basically a vegetable.

Scoop Your Own Bulk Grains & Nuts

Granola, and oatmeal, and grits, Oh my!

Granola, and oatmeal, and grits, Oh my!

Ok, mostly I think I just like scooping things

Try Before You Buy

Now I don't have to sit here and pretend that I know what sorpressata tastes like.

Now I don’t have to sit here and pretend that I know what sorpressata tastes like.

One thing I really love about Earth Fare is that they know how overwhelming it can be to make the transition from the big brands to smaller, healthier brands. You’re not sure you’re going to like a certain product, and that makes you hesitant to buy it. Earth Fare takes the mystery out of the whole experience. They’ll happily open any product on the shelves and let you try it to make sure you’re buying something that you’ll actually enjoy.

Find the Perfect Cheese

Oh, my cheesus.

Oh, my cheesus.

So many cheeses, so little time. Plus, if they don’t care a cheese you’re looking for, they can special order it (as long as it comes from one of their approved vendors & follows their healthy rules).

Natural Beauty

Beauty also starts from the outside in.

Because you should be just as concerned with what you’re putting on your body as what you’re putting in it.

$6 Meal Deals

Did I mention they have free wifi?

Pretty much any day of the week, you can stop by Earth Fare and get dinner for $6, featuring select menu items on different days like rotisserie chickens, pizza, and more!

Plus, I love me some chunky peanut butter.

Pretty sure I still have a bottle of agave syrup that I bought in early 2010, so I think pouring my own might be a better alternative (and also I should really throw that old container out).

Man, I wish I lived closer to Summerville!

The new store opens on Wednesday morning, and they’re hosting a grand opening party at 7 am on 9/23 (ribbon cutting at 6:45 am). The first 100 people in line will get a gift card of varying values up to $500! There will be product demos, live music, raffles, activities for the kids, and more!

Charleston Small Plate Crawl

September 12, 2015

The reason I love restaurant week so much is because I get to try many new restaurants in Charleston with friends who like to share bites off of their plates, so I get a good sampling of what different restaurants have to offer. A new foodie event in Charleston, the Charleston Small Plate Crawl (November 3 – 5, 2015) is offering that very experience, but with a new twist. During the 3-day culinary event, Crawlers travel from restaurant to restaurant, sampling the best of Charleston’s culinary scene. Participating restaurants will offer special Small Plate Menus priced from $4 to $10 showcasing their cuisine and Chef’s talent.

I love the idea of this event!

I love the idea of this event!

A Crawl Guide indicates hours each restaurant will be participating during the three day culinary event. Participating restaurants choose from the following time blocks to participate during the Crawl: 7:30-11:00am (Breakfast), 11:30am-3pm (Lunch), 5-10pm (Dinner) and/or 11:30am to 10pm (All Day).

Also, apparently there are selfie contests.

Also, apparently there are selfie contests.

Here’s how the crawl works:

  1. Crawlers peruse restaurant menus, print the Crawl Guide and use the interactive map to plan their path and crawl.  A Crawl Guide is not needed, but is useful as a reference for a list of participating restaurants, addresses and hours.
  2. When a Crawler pays at each restaurant, they will scan a Server Card with a QR Code using a QR reader on their mobile device.  The first time they scan, they will be taken to http://ChekTrek.com and will be asked to enter their name, email address, and password.  They will then be logged into the Crawl system which will check them in at each restaurant as they scan additional Server Card QR codes.
  3. QR readers are available for free via phone app stores. We recommend “QR Code Reader” by Scan, Inc.  If a mobile device is not available, Crawlers may write down the alphanumeric code from the Server Card and enter these into http://ChekTrek.com before the end of the Crawl.
  4. If ANYONE in a group purchases a plate, EVERYONE in the group gets to scan the QR code for validation.   Sharing is encouraged! Only the person that ordered a Challenge Cocktail can scan the cocktail QR code.
  5. Crawlers are automatically entered into prize drawings based on the number of restaurants they have visited each time they scan a QR Code or enter a Code manually. Prizes will be listed on the Crawl website. When a Crawler visits a restaurant outside of the main core of Charleston restaurants, their prize entries will be doubled.  Prize winners will be contacted by email after the Crawl.
Ka-ching!

Ka-ching!

As of right now, confirmed restaurants include Vincent Chicco, Michael’s on the Alley, Saffire, O-Ku, HoM, and Virginia’s on King, with more restaurants to be added in the weeks leading up to the event. Follow the latest Crawl news by following Charleston Small Plate Crawl on Facebook. Columbia residents: The Columbia Small Plate Crawl will be happening in Cola September 22-24!

Charity Cocktail Fundraiser at Tavern & Table

August 28, 2015

Happy Friday! It’s the weekend and that means you should be out living it up and enjoying the fact that there are 2 whole days between now and when you have to be back at work. A good way to celebrate the weekend is by drinking a great tasting cocktail. But the best way to celebrate the weekend is by drinking a great tasting cocktail that raises money for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation!

I'll take 4, please.

I’ll take 4, please.

Head over to Tavern & Table between now & Labor Day (9/7) to order the Breath of Fresh Air cocktail (Honeysuckle vodka by Cathead Vodka, fresh squeezed grapefruit, San Peligrino & muddled strawberry), and enjoy your weekend knowing you can let off steam and raise money for a great cause all at the same time.

Dîner en Blanc Coming to Charleston

August 20, 2015

If there’s one thing that I love more than a dinner party, it’s a themed dinner party.

Themed *costume* dinner party?! I die.

Themed *costume* dinner party?! I die.

Dîner en Blanc is just that. A secret pop-up picnic where all the guests wear white and supply the following:

  1. A table, two (white) chairs, and white tablecloth.
  2. A picnic basket with food*, stemware, and white (surprise!) dinnerware.
*There will also be an option to get pre-order food, which can be picked up at the site (participating restaurants are TBD).
  3. Champagne or wine. Beer and hard liquor are a big “no no.”
And in October it will hopefully be much less humid.

And in October it will hopefully be much less humid.

Think of it as a giant picnic with your best friends who just happen to basically be the entire city of Charleston. There will be great food, dancing,  champagne, and sparklers. I’m so excited and it’s going to be so much fun! The Charleston event is happening on Thursday, October 15th, 2015, so mark your calendars!

And did I mention the sparklers??

If you’re anything like me, you’re obsessed with all those cooking shows where they pit chefs up against each other as they battle for who can make the best meal out of the provided ingredients. There’s just something about high-stress food porn drama that excites me more than any episode of RHOA could ever do.

Look how intense. Photo credit: Competition Dining Series

Introducing the Competition Dining Series, a single-elimination tournament highlighting the best of the state’s food, agriculture and culinary talent, will pit 14 highly competitive chefs against each other in its upcoming tournament in Greenville, the first time it’s been held in South Carolina. All of the 13 interactive battles will be hosted at Larkin’s Sawmill from Aug. 3 through Sept. 7, and tickets are now available.

How it Works: In every Competition Dining dinner, two chef teams battle it out preparing three courses each centered on a featured regional ingredient that is revealed the morning of the event. Ticketed guests savor a full-service, six-course meal without knowing which chef prepared which dishes. Unlike any other cooking competition, attendees vote on each course using a free app, and ultimately help determine who moves on to the next battle round and who goes home.

Their fate is in your hands. Or mouth, I guess.... that's what she said??

Their fate is in your hands. Or mouth, I guess…. No pressure.

Series competitors are randomly assigned to brackets. Two random competitors received a bye to automatically advance to the second round. The Greenville preliminary match-up battles include:

Damion Norton of Professional Catering in Greenville

I’m trying to figure out which chef would be most likely to say “I’m not here to make friends; I’m here to WIN!”

“Since we started these battles, Competition Dining Series has hosted hundreds of chefs and thousands of community members in North Carolina,” said Jimmy Crippen, Competition Dining Series founder and host. “We’re thrilled to do the same in Greenville with the launch of our first South Carolina series. We have chefs from here in Greenville and all over the region, and it’s sure to be a highly competitive tournament.”

Charleston Eat Local Challenge

March 25, 2015

Eating and shopping locally have become important issues to the American consumer lately as people have become more aware of their carbon footprint and its impact on the environment. When it comes to food, it’s said that our food travels an average of 1,500 miles before it reaches our plates, which is a really long way to go, considering how many farms exist in SC & that the state is only about 260 miles long.

ELC_FB_HEADER_KALE

In an effort to get people to become more aware of where their food is coming from, Lowcountry Local First has declared the month of April “Eat Local Month” and is is asking everyone to sign up for the “Eat Local Challenge,” which starts April 1. Here are the basics of the challenge:

  • Participants pledge to shift $10 or more of their weekly food spending towards our local food system.
  • Anyone can participate. Sign-up as an individual or get your friends & co-workers involved and take the challenge as a team.
  • Participation is FREE. All you have to do is commit to shifting $10 from your current food budget to local food options (local = as close to home as possible and within the state of South Carolina).

ELC_FB_HEADER_OYSTER

Easy peasy! All you have to do is sign up for the challenge here. All participants in the challenge will receive:

You may or may not know that I recently moved to Johns Island, one of those little gems on the coast of South Carolina that features a number of local farms, as well as roadside produce stands and the weekly farmers market. Since moving out here, I’ve really been trying to keep my produce purchases as local as possible and I’ve been taking advantage of the great options available to me out here, as well as those downtown (like the Veggie Bin).

ELC_FB_HEADER_RADISH

I hope you’ll join the eat local challenge, and I invite you to follow along with me as I catalog my experiences, recipes, and anecdotes along the way. Feel free to tweet at me or comment with recipe ideas and ways you’re planning on eating local in April!
