ICYMI: Persimmon Breaks Ground on 2nd Location

March 29, 2016

Last week, Rob Cassi–owner of one of Charleston’s most popular gourmet sandwich restaurants (and one of my favorite restaurants), Persimmon Cafe–broke ground to start construction on his new location in the Summerville Center (next to the new Earth Fare at 1097 Main St), and plans to open in early Summer 2016.

persimmon-summerville

Spanning 1600 square feet with 40 seats inside and 20 seats on their patio, Cassi wants the Persimmon Cafe in Summerville to be an integral part of rising culinary scene as the city continues to develop and add several new restaurants.

Persimmon Cafe plans to hire 20-25 employees, all who will get health insurance and vacation pay.  This is a stand alone restaurant that, unlike the one downtown, will not share a space with a laundromat.

Persimmon Cafe in downtown Charleston is located at 226 Calhoun St. Charleston, SC 29401, and has fed the community for 3 years.

New “Heritage Dinners” at McCrady’s

March 7, 2016

Anyone who reads my blog on a regular basis knows that I have a moderate to severe case of obsession with Chef Sean Brock. My soul sister Lily bought me his cookbook, Heritage for my birthday (or maybe Christmas?) and was even dedicated enough to wait in line to get it signed by the man / legend himself. So that’s why I’m so excited that McCrady’s  is now offering “Heritage Dinners” in their Long Room (assuming you have 43 friends you’d like to invite over for dinner).

long-room

With Heritage Dinners, Chef Sean Brock’s James Beard Award winning book Heritage comes to life in the Historic Long Room at McCrady’s. Heritage Dinner experiences offers guests a thoughtfully crafted menu, inspired by Heritage recipes and handpicked by Chef Sean Brock and Chef de Cuisine Daniel Heinze. Guests will rediscover heirloom products and revisit what it means to cook and eat in the South and this historic space.

The Historic Long Room can be booked for a Heritage Dinner Monday through Sunday for lunch or dinner. Dinners are served at one grand table and can accommodate up to 44 guests. More information on the Historic Long Room and Heritage Dinners can be found here.

Charleston Beer Exchange to Relocate to NoMo

February 2, 2016

Scott Shor, owner of Edmund’s Oast and The Charleston Beer Exchange, announced today plans to consolidate and make some exciting changes to his popular retail store. By early 2017*, The Charleston Beer Exchange will relocate to a brand new location being built adjacent to Edmund’s Oast Brewpub and be renamed Edmund’s Oast Exchange. The space will be over 2,000 square feet, two stories and is being designed by architect Andrew Gould of New World Byzantine. The store will continue to offer their incredible selection of craft beer with approximately 1,000 different varieties sold in cans, bottles, kegs, and growlers. Edmund’s Oast Exchange will be the only location anywhere patrons can buy beers produced at Edmund’s Oast Brewpub.

In addition to the top notch beer selection, the retail space will add a comprehensive wine collection, featuring roughly 500 different labels. This will include everything from benchmark classics to fun finds from the young vanguard. An emphasis will be placed on wines that tell a story and sharing these stories with customers. Also included will be glassware, merchandise, and food items made at Edmund’s Oast such as charcuterie. A porch/garden area along with the expanded interiors will be used to host a full curriculum of beer and wine classes and tastings year round. Being closer to the brewpub, the store can collaborate easily to expand events at the restaurant such as offering additional beverage related dinners. Edmund’s Oast Exchange will be led by a stellar group of knowledgeable professionals including Sarah O’Kelley, Certified Cicerone® Brandon Plyler, and Mark Sahara.

“It is pretty wonderful to be able to bring our popular beer store closer in proximity to Edmund’s Oast Brewpub and our anticipated offsite brewery, Edmund’s Oast Brewing Company. We have longed to have a larger space for the retail component, to be able to offer additional parking and have a large footprint for better displays, events, and additional products such as wines. We are thrilled to have strong talent leading this effort and our onsite education component. In the meantime, we will continue to offer all the same great beer, service, and tastings at our current location. No changes will be made until we get closer to the anticipated opening in early 2017.”
– Scott Shor, owner.

The store’s relocation to the Half Mile North/NoMo area, is in addition to other recent openings and announcements of retail spaces and brings more convenient places for people to come to visit, shop, and dine.

*Early 2017 is just an anticipated date and dependent of construction.

Coast Beer Dinner at Bay Street Biergarten 1/21/16

January 19, 2016

On Thursday January 21, 2016 at 6:30pm, Bay St Biergarten will host a delicious all-inclusive four course dinner created by executive chef Vaughn Collins featuring Charleston’s own Coast Brewing Co.

Coast Beer dinner

The menu for the dinner is as follows:

  • Shrimp Bisque paired with Shreddin Wheat- an American wheat ale which consist of vienna malt, wheat malt, American hops and American ale yeast.
    • Why it works with bisque: the vienna malt lends a slight toastiness, the wheat gives the beer a higher protein content which allows for a fuller mouth feel, and the moderate hop content will cut through the creaminess of the bisque
  • Arugula and crab salad with asparagus and tear drop tomatoes paired with 32/50 Kolsch- a traditional German ale which consist mainly of pilsner malt, a little bit of wheat, Kolsch yeast and a mix of German and American hops.
    • Why it works with this type of salad: The Kolsch yeast which calls for a cooler fermentation temperature, along with the use of pilsner malt allows the beer to be light bodied and crispy clean which does not over power the subtle flavors of the crab. The earthy character of the hops work very well with the arugula and asparagus, and the slight acidity of the beer matches the acidity of the tomatoes.
  • Bourbon marinated filet with goat cheese risotto paired with Alterior Motive- a traditional German ale which consist of Pilsner malt, munich malt, a mix of German and American hops, and Kolsch yeast.
    • Why it works with beef and risotto: The munich malt provides a nice caramelized malty backbone which works with the caramelized beef. The hop character cuts through the rich fat of the beef and the creaminess of the the goat cheese risotto.
  • German Chocolate Cake paired with Blackbeerd- a Russian Imperial Stout which consist mainly of 2 row malt, munich malt, caramel and roasted malts, smoked malt, oats, American hops and American ale yeast.
    • Why it works with this dessert: The full dark body and slight sweetness work well with the richness of the chocolate. The oats provide a nice silky mouth feel and the hops help to balance out the sweetness of the dish.

Menu is subject to change.
Tickets are $50/person and can be purchased at www.BSBbierdinner.com  Only 30 tickets available.
