Weekend Roundup: Lazy is the New Black

June 10, 2014

I don’t have a whole lot to report today, as this weekend was relatively uneventful. Thursday, I went to the Grand Opening party at Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams with a few of my coworkers and ate my weight in some of the best ice cream I’ve ever eaten. If you haven’t had a chance to check it out, I highly recommend you do so. My favorites are the dark chocolate, salted caramel, pineapple upside down cake, and … well they’re all pretty much my favorites.

So much yummy.

So much yummy.

Friday, I grabbed some red curry from Fire Street Food after work and settled in to watch Season 2 of Orange is the New Black on Netflix. I was glad that the weather outside was crummy, so I didn’t feel bad about vegging on my couch all evening eating Thai food.

It's been too long, Fire. Via Yelp

Saturday, I tried to be a little more productive, hitting up a Weight Watchers meeting and doing some circuit training at the gym before picking up lunch from Persimmon Cafe. We played a little Bananagrams at his office before I went back home to settle into the rest of the season of OITNB. My cats were super excited to have me home for the whole day.

Especially Weasley.

Especially Weasley.

Saturday night, I went to a Cards Against Humanity party that my friend Sheena invited me to. It was lots of fun and I laughed a lot. Also, it might’ve been the biggest game of CAH that I’ve ever played, which only made it funnier.

So many deviants in one room together.

So many deviants in one room together.

Sunday, I went to brunch at Butcher and Bee before going to work finishing the last 4 episodes of OITNB. I made some spaghetti squash for dinner and lounged around until it was time to watch Game of Thrones.

I may or may not have had tater tots as an appetizer. Dieting is hard.

Hope everyone has a great week! If you’ve finished Season 2 of OITNB, let me know what you thought of the season in the comments!

Georgeans Caribbean Soul [CLOSED]

May 23, 2014

A few weeks ago (before my life got insanely busy), Lily and I took to walking the bridge after work a couple of nights a week. After one of these walking-talking-gossip sessions, Lily and I decided to reward ourselves for our hard work with some Caribbean food.

I mean, basically.

I mean, basically.

Lily and Chrissy suggested we order from Georgeans Caribbean Soul because they were a little obsessed after they discovered it. Chrissy enticed me with the promise of yummy jerk chicken and “bangin’ mac and cheese.” Chrissy and I ordered the Jerk Box with mac & cheese, cauliflower mash, and rice & veggies ($10). Their mac and cheese is thick and creamy and cheesy and I loved how flavorful the cauliflower mash was. If I didn’t know it was cauliflower, I definitely would’ve thought it was mashed potatoes. So yummy. The jerk chicken was full of spice and only a little heat, and was so yummy. My only complaint was that they use skin-on chicken (but that’s more of a personal preference than a fault on their part).

So. Much. Food.

So. Much. Food.

Lily ordered the curry chicken bowl with mixed veggies and rice and cauliflower mash ($7). The curry is mild and deliciously home-y. The chicken curry is served over the veggies and rice so the curry sauce flavors that, too. Lily was definitely a fan.

Look at that curry sauce. I can almost smell it.

Look at that curry sauce. I can almost smell it.

The owners were awesome and super friendly, even though we ordered 20 minutes before they closed, forcing them to stay open an extra 20 minutes to prepare all of our food. She said they keep the light on and the door open while they’re there, so even if it’s past closing time, “if somebody’s hungry, we’ll feed ’em.” They also said that they can make most Caribbean dishes, even if they’re not on the menu, as long as you give them a little heads up.

And this is their whole menu.

This is their whole menu, and I still had trouble deciding.

You get a lot of high quality food for not a lot of money. If you haven’t stopped here yet, get your butt down to Line St. and order some jerk chicken!

And they just added these cute little tables! Via Facebook

Food Film Festival, Night 2: Food Porn Party

May 9, 2014

So these past 2 weeks were really fun, but also very busy, so I’m a little (read: a lot) behind on all of the things I need to catch you guys up with. So let’s get started! Saturday 4/26 was the second night of the Food Film Festival and I was excited to be joined by my mom for the “Food Porn Party.” She was excited but wasn’t really sure what to expect.

What she definitely wasn't expecting was to meet her first food porn star, but that's how you roll at the Food Film Festival.

What she definitely wasn’t expecting was to meet her first food porn star, but that’s how they roll at the Food Film Festival.

Night 2 took place at High Wire Brewing on King Street, which is a really cool space if you haven’t been there yet.

The pre-party was catered by Charleston Harbor Fish House and featured lots of delicious hors d’oeuvres, like prosciutto, goat cheese, arugula, and fig roll,. I’ve never been to CHFH before, but after these snacks, I’ve added it to my list of places to try.

And this is just the pre-party!

And this is just the pre-party!

I was really excited to try the gin from High Wire, as I’d heard it was delicious.

I may not have been making that face, but I was definitely as excited as that lady was. Photo Credit: Georgi Richardson

They were using it to make a signature cocktail, the Fitzgerald, featuring gin, lemon juice, bitters, simple syrup and a green onion (I think?) as a garnish that I used as a straw. It was so yummy. I’m not a huge fan of gin, but I love High Wire’s. It wasn’t too pine sol tasting like I think most gins are and it had just a little bit of sweetness to it.

The second night of the festival consisted of 10 films, all related to food porn, i.e. food that tastes as good as it looks. I’ll give a brief synopsis of each of the films, as well as the food it was paired with. The first was Paloma, a delightful short film served with a paloma cocktail, which basically tasted like a margarita. Tina didn’t care for hers, so whoops! 2 for me!

To be fair it was more of a shot.

To be fair it was more of a shot than a “drink.”

The Best Fish Tacos In Ensanada was really short, and I don’t actually remember much from the film. These tacos came from Basico in Charleston (also on my list of places to try) and I don’t know if it’s the best fish taco I’ve ever had, but I did enjoy it. Again, Tina refused to try a fish taco, so I got to have 2.

Gosh, I love fish tacos.

Gosh, I love fish tacos.

How To Make A Turtle Burger was hilarious and fun, despite the fact that it had no dialogue. What it did have, however, was a sexy butt crack shot, which was hilarious and fun. A turtle burger (turkey burger wrapped in turkey bacon with hot dogs designed to be the shape of a turtle) was provided for us to try from HoM, and it was very yummy. It even tasted good 2 days later when I gave my leftovers to a friend.

Plus, it tastes delicious.

No, that’s not one of the guys from Duck Dynasty.

Lemon Muffins With A Sweet Surprise was also a fun film. I wish all recipes came with a short video like this. The muffins were provided by Browns Court Bakery, and damn were they good. I may have stolen 3 of them after the movie was over (and you wonder why I’m on a diet now).

Spoiler alert: the "sweet surprise" is a mounds candy bar.

Spoiler alert: the “sweet surprise” is a mounds candy bar.

Fondue was probably my favorite of all of the films. Featuring the world’s first food porn star, this raunchy comedy short film gave you all the instructions for cooking fondue, and some visual aids for how to eat it.

Very visual.

Very visual.

Old Fashioned Salted Caramels was also really fun to watch, and even more fun to eat. You may notice that the donuts in my picture are different than the ones featured in the film, and that’s because shipping issues caused the original donuts to be held up so they had to call in some unglazed Krispy Kremes to fill in. I’m not complaining, because they were so tasty. Tina also grabbed about 12 of the actual Caramels that Libby passed out, and they were equally tasty.

Caramel on a Krispy Kreme donut? Psh. Diabetes is totally worth it.

Caramel on a Krispy Kreme donut? Psh. Diabetes is totally worth it.

The most heartfelt and emotional of all of the films was Crazy, A Story About Cake (And Other Things). It was the story of one family’s recipe for a cake that was treasured and passed down from one member to another. It actually made me tear up a little, I’m not gonna lie. It was great. Here’s my mother posing for a picture. George’s aunt made the crazy cake for the festival, and it was actually pretty good, despite the fact that you make the whole cake in the pan. No mixing bowl needed!

Maybe because it reminds me of my crazy family.

Maybe because it reminds me of my crazy family.

At Home with Edward Wohl was told documentary style and was the longest film of the night. He makes hand carved wooden cutting boards out of this special type of wood out in wisconsin (I think). The film was fun and had just the right touch of humor, whimsy, and morality.

This picture reminds me of Mystery Science Theater 3000 a little bit.

This picture reminds me of Mystery Science Theater 3000 a little bit.

Food Play was probably my least favorite of the films this night. I thought it was a little slow moving and was a little awkward. I get why some people would be really into this kind of humor, I’m just not one of them. I do appreciate the idea and the filmography, though.

Just not my style.

Just not my style.

My least favorite of the food samples came from Butcher & Bee’s torta for the film One Minute Meal, which was surprising because I usually love everything B&B (including owner Michael Shemtov).

Sorry B&B.

Sorry B&B.

The after party in the parking lot featured lots more samplings of the things we’d tried during the films, as well as a delicious clam pudding from The Macintosh (it was better than it sounds), some cookies, and good company (I finally met Holy City Sinner! How fun!). The after-after party was at The Macintosh, in the special events space on the patio in the very back of the restaurant. It was gorgeous back there, but after sampling the food they brought out for us (not that I was at all hungry) I stand by my original review saying that I don’t really care for it. I feel bad because Chef Bacon seems like a really nice guy.

My phone really doesn't do it justice.

My phone really doesn’t do it justice.

Tina and I capped the night off with a ride home from Co-Pilot, which you guys should really check out because it’s a solid business plan and why isn’t this service offered everywhere? Hopefully I’ll get night 3 up in the next couple of days, followed by a few solid weeks of restaurant reviews and a recap of my time at the American Culinary Foundation’s Southeastern Conference. See you soon!

Charleston Food Film Festival, Night 1

April 25, 2014
I'm basically a professional photographer.

I’m basically a professional photographer.

Last night, Lily and I attended the first night of the 2nd Annual Charleston Food Film Festival atop the USS Yorktown in the Charleston Harbor.

Look how excited we are!

Look how excited we are!

The main feature the first night was “Kings of BBQ Barbecue Kuwait,” a short film by director John Markus (who’s super nice, btw), which chronicles him as he “teams up with the most legendary BBQ Pitmasters in America, travel to the Middle East, and cook an unforgettable homestyle dinner of smoked brisket and chicken for thousands of US troops stationed in Kuwait.”

The film was about 37 minutes long, and was a joy to watch. I was entertained from start to finish. The coolest part was when you were sitting in your seat watching the soldiers enjoy their brisket on the screen, brisket suddenly appeared in your lap for you to try, too. The brisket was provided by Sticky Fingers and was prepared by the pitmasters from the film who’d been cooking it for most of the day.

The best kinds of events are the ones where food magically appears in front of you.

The best kinds of events are the ones where food magically appears in front of you.

The second film was called “Mile High Pie,” by director Melanie Addington, which told the story of ” mile-high pies at Ed & Kay’s Restaurant in Benton, Arkansas.” The film was about 4 minutes long, and I really enjoyed the lemon meringue pie we sampled during the film, provided by Wild Flour bakery in Charleston.

Magically appearing pie!

Magically appearing pie!

After the films were over, there were buffet stations setup with a full BBQ feast available (chicken wings, brisket, baked beans, coleslaw, potato salad, and beers from Holy City Brewery), being served to us by the same pitmasters who were featured in the first film.

So delicious.

So delicious.

Although I took the time to stop and talk to each of the pitmasters, I was extra excited to get a photo with my favorite, Johnny Trigg, a two-time Jack Daniels World Championship Invitational grand champ.

The champ, Johnny Trigg!

I really enjoyed getting the opportunity to talk to director John Markus about what inspired him to make the movie. You can tell by the way he talked (even with BBQ sauce smeared on his cheek) that he put some of his own heart into the film. He seemed to genuinely be pleased to hear that we enjoyed the film.

So basically, we’re going to watch a bunch of short films about food and then you get to try the foods featured in the films. I’m personally looking forward to Best Fish Tacos in Ensenada and Biting Into The Ramen Burger, which both sound delicious, but How To Make A Turtle Burger intrigues me, as well. Click to the Charleston Food Film Festival for a full list of the films to be featured.

Weekend Roundup: Here Comes The Bride

April 7, 2014

Saturday morning I decided to chop my hair off! I now have a semi-bob. It’s a little shocking, since it was nice and long before and now I can barely put it in a ponytail. But I love it! It takes me half as much time to get ready now, and it always looks cute. What do you think?

Apparently I only make Muppet faces.

Apparently I only make Muppet faces.

Saturday night, I had the honor of attending my freshman year roommate, Laila’s, wedding to Jonas Hall at Legare Waring House in Charlestowne Landing. It was a beautiful ceremony and reception and I had a wonderful time. Laila made such a beautiful bride! I know people say that all the time, but she was like extra beautiful.

But I wouldn't expect anything less from Laila.

But I wouldn’t expect anything less from Laila.

Sunday, I met my friends Becca and Cori at the Cajun Festival at James Island County Park. I got to try crawfish etouffee (A-2-fay) and ate my weight in cajun boiled peanuts. We ended the weekend with the Game of Thrones premiere, which was SO AWESOME.

"How's it hangin'?"

“How’s it hangin’?”

What were the highlights of your weekend?

Weekend Roundup: The Mud Between My Toes

March 31, 2014

Hope everyone had an awesome weekend! Mine was really fun. Friday night, a friend hosted game night at his house and Julianne was in town and we all drank a little too much wine. Saturday morning Lily, Julianne, and I drove around for awhile trying to find a good brunch place before settling on Chick-fil-a because we were hungry and didn’t feel like waiting in line.

No regrets.

No regrets.

After “brunch” Lily and I went to Brittlebank Park for the 2nd annual Spring Jam Music Festival. There were 2 stages, 10 bands, and 2 performance art groups, food trucks, beer tents, vendors, artisans, and mud. Lots of mud.

Most of which ended up in Lily's shoes.

Most of which ended up in Lily’s shoes.

We had so much fun though. I found a bunch of new favorite bands, like Space Capone, Kopecky Family Band, and Brave Baby.

Not bad for my first music festival!

Not bad for my first music festival!

We also got to try a new food truck, Pep Rolls, which was awesome. According to their Facebook page, a “pep roll” is a “whole wheat based roll stuffed with delicious pepperoni, topped with seasoning, and baked to a golden brown perfection.” We tried the Sleazy Cheezy which had pepperoni, nacho cheese, and jalapeno. Soooo good.

Seriously. Why isn't that in my face right now?

Seriously. Why isn’t that in my face right now?

Sunday morning, Lily and I had a proper brunch at Edmund’s Oast, which was fantastic. You can check out the full review here, but let me just say, their cornbread was possibly the best I’ve ever eaten. I can’t wait to go back for dinner.

Which may or may not be due to the giant dollop of honey butter on top.

Hopefully you all have a great week (and didn’t get fooled by too many April Fool’s Day pranks!)

Charleston, SC Restaurant Reviews

CO

March 28, 2014

So I’m a recent Vietnamese food convert. I’m kind of surprised it took me this long, but nobody’s perfect. I’ve been eating banh mi for a couple of years now, and am obsessed, but I never really ventured any further into Vietnamese cuisine until one fateful day back in December when I stumbled on a tweet from Foodmancing The Girl talking about how much he loves Pho.

You had me at "free dumplings."

You had me at “free dumplings.”

That first lunch was awesome. I took Foodmancing’s advice and got the pork belly buns (pork belly, pickled cucumber and carrots, hoisin, cilantro, $6), and those suckers were on point.  The buttery bread, the perfectly cooked pork, the crisp pickled veggies…I’m drooling a little just thinking about them. If it wasn’t Friday during Lent, I’d probably head there for lunch right now.

Seriously. They're so good.

Seriously. They’re so good.

The main purpose of my visit, however, was to try Pho for the first time. I was a little intimidated because I didn’t really know what I was getting myself into. I opted for the beef pho (rare beef, rice vermicelli, bean sprouts, cilantro, thai basil, scallions, beef broth, $12) which was so good it’s sinful. Not really knowing what the protocol was, I just dumped in all of the accoutrements, including lots of hot sauce, which added a little more heat to the broth than I was prepared for, but it was still delicious. The beef was sliced really thin and cooked perfectly and the flavors of the soup came together perfectly. I was instantly a fan.

My strategy for most things is "throw everything in there and hope it tastes good."

My strategy for most things is “throw everything in there and hope it tastes good.”

When Naomi came to visit, we were excited that CO had a vegan menu for her to choose from. We started out with a couple of fancy cocktails, which were delicious. Naomi really enjoyed her asian pear cider (spiced rum, schnapps, asian pear, cinnamon, $9) and I thought the spiced mandarin caipirinha (cachaca, grand marnier, muddled mandarin & lime, star anise simple syrup, cinnamon, nutmeg, $9.5) was pretty unique and awesome as well.

Look at that smile!

Look at that smile!

and then ordered some Tofu buns (crispy tofu, pickled cucumber and carrots, cilantro, $6) which were really good (although not as good as the pork belly. But as a carnivore, I might be biased). My only complaint is that without the hoisin sauce, they were a little dry.

Tofu and I have an uneasy truce.

Tofu and I have an uneasy truce.

I was trying to branch out and try something other than my usual pho, so I deferred to the waitress who recommended the hanoi noodles (spicy yellow curry, onion, carrots, zucchini, rice noodles, shrimp, shanghai sausage, $14). I really liked it, although the flavors started getting a little overwhelming towards the end. The shanghai sausage wasn’t my favorite, but the shrimp was perfectly cooked and really delicious. Also it’s asian food, so there’s a lot of grease.

Still delicious, though!

Still delicious, though!

Naomi was really sad that the green curry was not vegan for some reason (and they never responded to my tweet asking them why), so she ended up ordering the vegan yakisoba (rice noodles, tofu,  cabbage, carrots, onion, zucchini, garlic, sweet mirin soy sauce, $14) instead. She absolutely loved it and was basically licking the bowl by the end. I really liked how well they cooked the tofu, which is high praise coming from me.

Gotta love a restaurant that gives you plenty of cilantro with every dish.

Gotta love a restaurant that gives you plenty of cilantro with every dish.

Next time I go, I really want to try the curry laksa (shrimp, shredded chicken, bun rice noodles, shredded cucumber, thai basil, baby bok choy, spicy coconut broth) and the mapo doufo (ground pork, tofu, edamame, carrots, black bean garlic sauce), which both sound delicious. If you haven’t been, I highly recommend you check it out, especially their new $4 happy hour special weekdays from 4-7.

Plus the space is just so sexy!

Weekend Roundup: I Want To Ride My Bicycle

March 10, 2014

This was my final weekend with Naomi visiting, which was kind of sad, but luckily the weather stopped being cold and rainy for us! We spent Saturday riding bikes from West Ashley to downtown. I was really impressed with us, although after biking 10.4 miles in 3 hours, we were pretty gross and exhausted.

I mean, we're still pretty cute for being windblown and sweaty.

I mean, we’re still pretty cute for being windblown and sweaty.

Also, as it turns out, going semi-vegan with Naomi was not as hard as I anticipated. Mostly due to the fact that Dell’z Deli exists and is open 6 days a week. I’m not even ashamed to say that we ate there 3 times. I could definitely go vegan full time if as long as I could eat at Dell’z most days.

Like these vegan nachos which are just as good, if not better, than the real thing.

Like these vegan nachos, which are just as good as–if not better than–the real thing.

Naomi and I also tried out a number of vegan-friendly hotspots around town like CO, Lee Lee’s Hot Kitchen, The Rarebit, and Mellow Mushroom, which were all delicious, and Black Bean Company which really wasn’t. I really wanted to like it there, but it just wasn’t good. Especially when we asked about vegan desserts and the guy recommended the yogurt parfait. Yogurt? Really? Not to mention the fact that one of the reasons we chose to eat there in the first place was because they advertised a vegan brownie on their website. Just disappointment all around with BBCo. CO, Lee Lee’s, and Mellow were on point though. I think Naomi was sadder to leave behind all the delicious food than she was to say goodbye to me.

I spoil her.

I spoil her.

After dropping Naomi off at the airport, Lily and I went and saw Mr. Peabody & Sherman, which was really cute and funny and I highly recommend it. For dinner, I met some friends at Rutledge Cab Co. where we split a nutella milkshake (which is not as good as Nutella custard from Persimmon, just FYI) and an order of fish tacos, which were pretty delish. It was a decidedly better experience than my first visit, so maybe I’ll give their food another chance someday. This week is exciting because I’m going to see Aziz Ansari on Wednesday, FRONT ROW, which I’m so pumped about. I hope you all have a great week, too!

This is my "excited to see Aziz Ansari" face.

Duvall Express Launch Party

February 10, 2014

A few weeks back, I was invited to attend the launch party for Duvall Express, a small event catering and event space in North Charleston, SC. The space is very multi-purpose, incorporating events, theater productions, catering kitchen, and serving as a “home base” for a number of the Lowcountry’s best food trucks. The event was in conjunction with Lowcountry Local First and consisted of many local vendors setting up tables in the space and offering samples of their products for everyone to try, in addition to the menu provided by Duvall Express.

You had me at "Mac and Cheese Buffet"

You had me at “Mac and Cheese Buffet”

Josh at Duvall Express was kind enough to give us the “Behind-The-Scenes” tour of the multiple kitchens (yes, there are more than one!) and the event spaces in their North Charleston facility. Duvall Express partnered with South Carolina vendors whose products they incorporated into their local-themed menu. It’s nice to see businesses focused on helping out local entrepreneurs. Couple that with the fact that pretty much everything that I tried from their catering menu was delicious, and you can bet I can’t wait to attend an event catered by Duvall Express!
